I’d like to express my gratitude for TJ and their car company. We arrived in Hilo and was headed to Kona to drop my sisters car and needed a rental that day. He was very responsive after we reached out and was able to get us a car at the time of our arrival. He mentioned he would close but came back to give us a rental, which I really appreciated! The car we used was a red Toyota. We gave him notices about the vehicles status before we took off and he was very responsive to everything we had updated him about. Car was def reliable the entire time of our trip. I would def use this service as it was a timeless process of pick up and drop off. Thank you so much!! And the pricing was amazing! There is a security refundable deposit so be prepared when checking in!

Car Rentals of Hawaii is our go to rental company while on Big Island. TJ the owner, is so accommodating and the check in and check out process is seamless. The cars are always clean and mechanically sound. I highly recommend this company for all your car rental needs.

Great little company took a while to get the deposit back but it did come through. The guy was super nice. Had to call to get them to come to the office to give me the car. Had some dings and scratches but I don’t care about that stuff. Overall pretty decent experience would recommend for a cheaper rental option

We had a somewhat mixed experience using Car Rentals of Hawaii Positives: The price is great We had no issues with the car. It had 28,000 miles on it and showed a little wear-and-tear but no complaints Negatives: Communication is the big issue here. We had a reservation to pick up the car a little after noon, but with some delays related to the flight and getting an Uber, we get to the office at 1pm to find there is no sign of anyone and spend 10min calling the two numbers they have on the wall. Someone finally calls us to let us know that the car we were supposed to get got broken into the night before. They tell us they can maybe get a car for us or they can offer us a refund. We opt for the car and they were able to get us one within a couple hours. We understand that things can happen outside of their control, but the issue I have is that at no point either before our reservation time or in the hour it took us to get to the office did they reach out to us to let us know there was a problem. Instead we arrived at a locked, empty office repeatedly calling and then spent two hours waiting around in the heat without access to a bathroom. Another minor comment is related to the drop off at the end of the rental period. We were instructed to leave the car in the lot, put the keys in the mail slot, and send an email indicating we returned it. I would've appreciated some kind of acknowledgement from the business that they received the email/car/etc but we just never heard from them again.

Really bad experience- would not recommend. We rented a van from them and the lack of customer service was just so disappointing. We were not able to evaluate the vehicle properly in pick up due to heavy down pour. We were instructed to send pictures of the condition of the car. We sent photos of very poor condition tires- we could see the cords. No response. Then two days into the trip our check engine light came on. I called three different numbers until I got through. I was told they had no other cars they could give me (which was their excuse that they were so busy they couldn’t really help me) and that they would get back to me. They never did. So basically I was stuck with a car that I felt was not safe and in poor condition. This is not the way I wanted to spend my vacation worrying about a vehicle carrying my family. I know that we opted for the more economical option but I’m just disappointed with the lies and lack of customer service. Super disappointed and would not recommend.
