Tirana - Razëm - Koman, Albania; Mavrovo Lake, North Macedonia; Štrpce - Peja, Kosovo
Welcome to Tirana! A capital city of contrasts and constant change, it still bears the visible marks of the communist era, particularly in its architecture and former bunkers, now repurposed as bars, museums, and cultural venues. You will be met at your hotel and given a pre-tour briefing to set the stage for the adventure ahead.
You will leave the capital via secondary roads before gradually climbing into the mountains. The first alpine tracks mark the start of the raid, between Albania and North Macedonia, in a region long isolated. The approach to Lake Mavrovo offers a calm and unspoiled natural setting at the edge of the national park.
A day dedicated to the mountains, with long stretches of tracks and a few easier sections on small secondary roads, leading to the border crossing into Kosovo. A region marked by the recent history of the Balkans. In Štrpce, the day ends with a local dish such as ćevapi, a Kosovar specialty made with grilled meat.
You gradually descend into the mountains of southern Kosovo, alternating between secondary roads and long stretches of smooth tracks. At the foot of the mountains, you pass through Prizren, the former cultural capital of Kosovo, known for its Ottoman old town and stone bridges.
Departing from Peja for a memorable day of cross-border travel, you leave Kosovo through the spectacular Rugova Canyon, one of the country's most famous natural sites, before entering Montenegro via a series of roads and tracks winding through the heart of the Dinaric Alps. After passing by Lake Plav, nestled between mountains and forests, you cross the border again into Albania and Razëm.
From the Razëm highlands, a beautiful road descends into northern Albania before joining a network of narrow, winding tracks, often carved into the mountainside. The day ends at Lake Koman, an artificial reservoir built during the communist era and often compared to a fjord for its spectacular gorges.
Final stretches of trails before the gradual descent towards Tirana. A clever mix of off-road and smoother sections, winding through rural Albania, provides a gentle end to the rally. The day takes you through a more secluded inland Albania, dotted with hydroelectric dams and structures inherited from the communist era, still essential to the country's energy supply.
