Today, you ride into the heart of WWII history, visiting the sites of three major battles in the region: Battle of the Neretva (Winter 1943 – Fourth Offensive) Battle of Sutjeska (Spring 1943 – Fifth Offensive) Landing on Drvar (Spring 1944 – Seventh Offensive) Departing Krk around 8 a.m., you’ll cross into Bosnia via Bihać. Along the way, stop in Senj, homeland of the fearless Uskoks, medieval warriors of legend, located on the 45th parallel, halfway between the equator and the North Pole. After breakfast at Drvar, depart around 9 a.m. and ride toward one of nature’s wonders, the mouth of the Buna, where a lunch break awaits. In the afternoon, arrive in Tjentište to visit the monument dedicated to the Battle of Sutjeska, the most iconic partisan memorial. This legendary battle, fought in spring 1943, was a turning point in the National Liberation War, where over 7,000 partisans sacrificed their lives to break the encirclement. After breakfast, you can revisit the Sutjeska Memorial Center for a deeper connection with history. Around 10:00 a.m., the ride continues toward Višegrad, stopping to admire the Mehmed-Pasha Sokolović Bridge and Kamengrad, landmarks of timeless heritage. Cross into Serbia and arrive at Mokra Gora, home to the famous Šarganski osmica (Sargan Eight). This narrow-gauge railway winds over Šargan Hill with a 5% ascent, numerous bridges and tunnels, and unique loops forming a figure-eight, truly one of Europe’s marvels. Today, the journey slowly takes you back to Krk, passing through the breathtaking landscapes of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant near Una, then continue to visit the Željava Military Airport, the largest underground airport and former base of the Yugoslav Army, straddling the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. An obligatory stop at Vratnik allows for a relaxed lunch at a charming local restaurant, soaking in the scenery and history along the way.
