Leaving Kuta, you head west passing small villages as well as a suspension bridge before turning right to go up the mountain north direction. Rice fields and clove trees line the curvy tarmac road. After a coffee break, you approach the north coast via the small town of Pupuan. Once on the northern ring road, you follow the coastline westward to the ferry port of Gilimanuk, interrupted by your lunch. The ferry to Java needs one hour, which you “win back” by entering a different time zone. Bypassing the area’s capital, Banyuwangi, you follow the national road no. 3 for some kilometers to Kalib
Today’s first goal is the sunrise point, Penanjakan, therefore, your activities start at around 3:00 a.m. All on Tarmac and semi-steep, you ride up to 2800 meters above sea level. The sunrise and the view of the active Mt. Bromo, as well as Mt. Semeru, the roof of Java, are just breathtaking. The way down is a different one and partly quite steep. Once at the bottom of the caldera, you enter the “Sandbox”. As you are bikers, you are allowed to approach the temple at the bottom of Bromo on two wheels, a biker’s advantage. If the well-known Ijen hike is wanted, you would have to leave the homestay around 1:00 a.m. to get the 15 kilometers up to the ranger station by bike. After a quick tea, you start the three-kilometer steep uphill hike and the climb on rocks down to the crater’s bottom (25 minutes) to see the famous blue fire. After enjoying the sunrise over the acidic crater lake, you make your way back to your bikes and ride back to the hotel for breakfast.
